I Think This is Politics: Democracy in Crisis

In my non-sober days, we talked about our brain cells a lot. Don’t make a pipe out of brass because of the lead.
When we did whippets, we knew that getting high on nitrous oxide—also known as 'hippie crack,' often found at a Dead or Sublime concert—was basically 'pulling a Rambo on our brain cells'… because oxygen deprivation kills brain cells. Now, it seems as if an unelected billionaire is 'pulling a Rambo' on our duly elected government and programs.
This is no hyperbole. I know I have people from all over the political spectrum on my Substack list. I could effortlessly be another Democrat breaking news here or writing against the current president and his de facto co-president, Elon Musk.
I’m not here to soapbox. Perhaps those people on my list may unsubscribe or want to engage in some way in the comments. Anyone is welcome to do so.
In this edition of “I Think This is Politics," I will share some of the media that I believe to be credible sources and accounts to follow if you agree with me and think that we have a serious problem on our hands.
As a Boy Scout and patriotic person all my life, with family members who have served to protect our rights, I must stand up to the basics of civics that I learned in those Cub Scouts and school in the ‘80s. I don’t have kids, so I don’t know how civics—or the balance of power between the three branches of government—has been taught in schools over the last 40 years. However, a chart similar to the one below has been etched in my brain since I first came across it in the Boy Scout Handbook.
Now, with the Supreme Court granting immunity to the Executive Branch (the President) and an unelected billionaire having access to sensitive information and payments through the DOGE program, it's clear that the chart needs an update as of today in 2025.
Gary Vaynerchuck (@garyvee) suggests reaching the largest audience for attention (as we do here on Substack) and recommends staying away from political content to ensure you don’t alienate 50% of your audience. I don’t 100% agree, but maybe I sorta half agree? This is a tough one, for sure.
USAID, Gaza, tariffs, egg prices… it’s all a bit much.
All I’ve been doing is what’s in my power as a democratic citizen of the United States: staying informed, contacting my reps, and engaging with my community.
