FACE FRONT!
DC has safely returned from a multiverse where Tuesdays were the days retailers put comics on the shelves. This was partially due to supply chain issues during the pandemic and a shift to a different distributor. Starting in July, Batman and Wonder Woman return to the regularly scheduled program on Wednesdays,
This DC Blog Post from earlier this year explains:
DC Returns to Wednesdays for New Comic Book Day
Beginning Wednesday, July 3
In addition to DC’s ComicsPRO presentation full of great news about upcoming DC publishing initiatives, DC also revealed plans to return to a Wednesday release schedule for new periodicals, beginning in July.
Responding to feedback from retailers and readers, DC is returning to the traditional Wednesday on sale timing, with new collected editions and graphic novels continuing to release on Tuesdays. As a result of supply chain disruption in 2020, the publisher pivoted to a Tuesday release schedule for new periodicals. This summer, DC will realign with the industry standard of Wednesday releases, and the New Comic Book Day that fans look forward to each week.
Since I joined The League, I have been doing pre-emptive Comic Book Picks for Wednesday's publication. It is part of my writing and work habits. It’s a canary in a coal mine. If I miss this deadline by a day or a week, I’m not doing well at time management, or other life things have gotten in the way. I took a week off, and
filled in for me (not that it was an IMPORTANT thing to get done at the time) on the week my mother passed away. What is important is to express gratitude to my pal for stepping in!There’s a little Photoshop involved, some rewriting of the book’s solicit copy, and posting both on my personal website and at leaguepodcast.com/picks.
Like my ‘Laundry Sunday’ - Picks of The Week is a ‘Tuesday’ thing, maybe a Wednesday thing. Sometimes it was a Thursday thing. These Tuesday and Wednesday postings are mostly based on vibes (and literally judging a book by its cover), and when I was shopping regularly, a Thursday posting might actually be my ‘top of stack’ picks after reading the books (actual).
As a Wednesday Warrior, for years I always wore a comic book t-shirt (I have a lot!) on Wednesdays. My good luck charm. Strangely, I’ve never gotten my hair cut on a Wednesday, as my mother believed it to be bad luck. Dad still won’t make his hair appointment on Wednesdays. I’m not superstitious, and likely Dad isn’t either. It’s just a small expression of “I love you” to Mom. We’re silly like that.
My t-shirt rules are broad. It’s not just one of my many Batman shirts. I can wear a Star Trek shirt, a Star Wars shirt, a James Bond shirt, a Buffy shirt, a Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (CAOS) shirt. All of these properties have …wait for it… COMIC BOOKS! CAOS being the Netflix show, adjacent to the Riverdale Universe, not the show with the talking cat or the original Archie comic (meta)!
Today, I am wearing a Monarch (TV show logo) shirt to record our Godzilla Minus One podcast tonight. Spoiler warning, but I gave it an A+.
MISSIVES FROM THE BIG TWO
This is not investing advice, but I have divested from any digital currency or NFTs. But I still get messages from DC about their digital Cowls and NFT comics.
I could unsubscribe from this list but I do like to see if there is any value in any of this stuff. There is value to a certain cadre of Bat Cowl collectors, and some of them look pretty cool, but owning NFTs has passed me by as a concept. If you love your custom Bat Cowls, show them off, I’d love to see them!
THANKS TO YOU, MARVEL UNLIMITED
The days of rolling into “Prime” aka our favorite comic shop, New England Comics Harvard Square (RIP) on a Wednesday with a crisp Flash shirt have passed me by. I’m getting my ‘completionist’ run of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero delivered to me from TFAW now. I read most comics (even ARAH) digitally.
The Marvel Ultimate Plus tier sends me some exclusive merch and an opportunity to see my name in print on a “thank you page” in a printed comic. I was sent to a page to enter my info and “how you’d like your name to appear” into a webform. I tried different browsers and it just would not work. The House of Ideas —to their credit— entered my info “Clay N. Ferno” manually, so just a shout out here to a rare pleasant customer service experience. Of the small amount of people reading a long list of names in 8 point type in this one exclusive comic book, I want them to think, “hey I know that guy” and google search me and sign up for this Substack. They won’t!

Until, next time, Make Mine Marvel Unlimited Plus!
Fun read, as always. I must admit, when i was a Wednesday Warrior, I felt no difference with DC's titkes being relased on Tuesday. Granted, I always just bought Batman books, so the store would order tons and never sell out on Tuesday and the books would just be tehre on Wednesday. I'm surprised that some fans complained, but then again, some comic fans complain about everything.
Also, it was a pleasure to fill in for you on the Picks. Let me know if you ever need a hand again. Until then, make mine Marvel!
