Part 4 of 6 (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3)
I’ve made a huge mistake.
Well, not a huge one, I’m sticking to my guns. I somehow thought I would be done in four sittings of this movie, but instead of breaking up my viewings into four hour-long chunks, I turned the movie off each night at chapter markers. There are 6 chapters, apparently (plus a non-chapter I am thinking is a post-credit scene). No big deal, but now I am trailing behind my podcast hosts who normally deride DC movies but are leaning toward positive reviews. I’ll be sure to post the LeaguePodcast review when it is up!

Moving on, The League arrives at the behest of the Bat-signal. Here is a redux of the big bad fight scene with Steppenwolf vs. The League on Stryker’s Island (possible X-men crossover…someday…please). Most notable is the absence of Bruce giving Barry an unneeded pep talk. Cyborg does a lot of the heavy lifting, bringing the hostages, including his Dad to safety. The Knightcrawler is once again the Bat-vehicle of choice and Cyborg’s command of the machine is improved. Steppenwolf’s interrogation in the Snyder Cut is enhanced by a cybernetic tarantula clicking around the Big Bad. Cyborg and Silas have a nice moment here, and not something I remember clearly from the original version.

The League assembles at this moment, with Aquaman showing up at the last minute to deal with the water. I was thinking, I know this is Stryker’s Island but is this maybe the same pit the Bane was raised in? I bet he would have loved a Knightcrawler to get himself out if so!

The last chapter dealt with the first half of Cyborg’s origin, and the rest of the origin and Victor’s run-in with the Mother Box is explored, causing not only a rift with The Unity but also between father and son. Leaving this out of the 2017 cut was a poor decision for many reasons, but clarifying Cyborg’s origin is the main one.

Steppenwolf talks to Desaad via Apokolips-Skype before handing the hologram receiver to Darkseid. “Darkseid Is”…planning a fun trip to Earth for the Anti-Life Equation, so we hope he remembers to bring a hat! Protection from UV rays is an important self-care step that is easy to do! And don’t overdo it on brandy on the beaches of Miami this spring break!

I love Lois and Ma-rtha Kent, but this short conversation may have been better in the first film, even with the cringe-inducing “thirst-trap” joke. It may be hard to tell from my screenshot above, but these two mugs are steaming way too much! Was a million dollars was spent on making these cups steam like a sunken Titanic? Correct me if I’m wrong, though.
The actors are great, this scene just seems to drag. I won’t spoil the cool reveal here until it comes up again, but this scene does end with a bit of a surprise. At least no sad songs in this chapter!
“Unite The Seven” — a scrapped tagline for Justice League, 2017
Martha admits she lost Kent Farm and encourages Lois to stop moping around and come back to the living. Hard to argue with that, or with any over-the-top foreshadowing! The League has plans for the Mother Box but needs some help from a recently deceased Kryptonian. If only…there were a way to bring him back!
Stay tuned for (at least) two more follow-up posts as we are more than halfway through Zack Snyder’s Justice League reaction posts.
I owe Zack a favor, it has been a while since I’ve been forced to write every day. Great exercise, and the most exercise I’ve gotten in “Our Pandemic Year”.
